History

We are a congregation with a stellar history! The Pavilion of God, founded in 2000 by the Reverend Dr.  Smith-Withers, came out of the historic Nineteenth Street Baptist in Washington, DC, where Rev. Smith-Withers was serving as an Associate Minister under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Derrick Harkins.  Nineteenth Street Baptist Church, organized in 1839, is the first “colored Baptist church” in Washington, DC and Rev. Smith-Withers was the first woman, in 1997, to serve on the ministerial staff at Nineteenth Street Baptist Church. The Pavilion of God is also the first congregation branching off from the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church that is founded by a woman!
